The Ely features:
I received this boot as a Christmas gift from my wife maybe 6 or 7 years ago to wear to work. I wore them 5 days a week and frequently off duty as well. They are stylish off duty as they were comfortable, functional and rugged on duty (I’m now retired). Sadly, after all the use and abuse the soles and leather finally wore out. I WILL be ordering another pair of the same style to replace the tried and true.
I have wore this boot for 3 years It has been wore in all kind of conditions has held up great it has never leaked wore them ever day They are just now showing signs of wear I am ordering new pair PS. I kept them clean
I bought this shoes on 07/30/2019 . It is my work shoes. I work 7days a week and 7days off next week.
I have issues with my heel and back pain in my right leg and it’s paining during my work week only when I am off the pain goes away after a day so I figured out it was my work shoes giving me back and heel pain . Pain rate is 8/10.
I bought these boots for work as I work a fast paced physical job
I have been wearing a pair of these boots nearly every day for 10 hours a day for over 2 years now. The initial breaking in sucked but after about 2 weeks they felt great. They are still in decent shape with the only issues being that the seems on the side have busted and the liner in the heel is in pretty bad shape. If I can do something about the heel I feel like I can get another 2 years from them. Overall great boot. Redwing does need to evaluate the repair program for these however. When I looked into getting them repaired I discovered it would cost roughly $40 more than I paid for the boots. That's kind of stupid.
First pair lasted 3 yrs of daily 12 hour use. Can't say any more. Just got another pair and is just as comfortable
I have been redwing customer for over 30 years and have worn a large variety of boots over that time, mostly safety toe boots. The last two pairs I have noticed a significant reduction in the overall comfort of the boots. Redwing boots always took some time to break in but these last two pair still lack the comfort factor even now that they are broke in. Regrettably
I’ll look at the competition for my next pair of boots.
This is for the Ely leather work boot, not the hiker.
1st. Out of the box, this is prob the most uncomfortable boot in the world. The leather upper is super stiff and the rubber sole is super stiff as well. The insoles that come with the boot, red wing should be ashamed of. That in sole causes more pain than anything. Left over card board would be more comfortable. Despite what red wing store employee stated, it doesn't take a week to break in, it takes months. Months of your feet hurting.
So once you get past the initial month break in and get a good insole, I went with protalus, the boot actually becomes a good work boot. I've been wearing my current one for about 18 months, applying the red wing mink oil once a month, and they have held up pretty well. I'm getting some seam splits and they are starting to crack at the toe bend, where the leather meets the sole. 18 months is fairly good for me, I work at a concrete plant, and between cement powder and constantly being wet, boots normally don't last a year for me.
Yes, with full leather uppers, the boot doesn't breath very well, so your foot with sweat a little during warmer weather. I just combatted that with some Vermont wool socks. I wear darn tough Vermont wool socks.
So I just ordered another pair. I also ordered a new protalus and plan on putting some leather oil on them as soon as they come in, hoping to break them a little different this time. Will prob try to red wing oil them every 3 weeks, and maybe at the toe bend, every other week.
I bet if red wing put this leather upper on a vibram sole, it would prob be the best work boot ever.
It needs a better outter sole and Def needs a better insole. Throw the insole that comes with the boot, right away.
I love these, it's my 3rd pair. As an auto technician I abuse work boots, I get 2-3 years outta a pair of these, I buy new ones and the old ones still are not worn out. Just comfortable and highly durable
The Ely boot has proved to be a very durable boot. I have worn them past the life of the sole( about a year and a half) and boots still going. Still waterproof
after two years of use. Just replaced with another pair recently and retired the old ones for my outside the house work. I work as a material handler and average 15 miles a day 8-10 hours a day.
This is by far the worst pair of boots I have ever worn. My company purchased these boots in bulk for my self and co-workers. We have been on our feet for well over 12 hours a day, 7 days a week on hard surfaces with constant climbing up and down stairs. After the first week we all had feet aches and soreness of our calves due to the bad comfort of these boots. I personally had purchased Red Wing inserts that were also destroyed within the first week. I have a different pair of Red Wing boots that I do similar work in without discomfort and enjoy wearing those boots even off work. I highly recommend NOT buying these particular boots and purchase a different pair. Stick with actual Red Wing boots that offer the 30 day trial and better warranty.
They are started to where now. The only thing that i don't like about these is the insoles. I tossed mine out 3 years ago and i put in some spenco 4s. I have a high arch and they feel familiar whenever i put them on. The outer sole is getting to the point where there is no traction so im thinking aboit buying a new pair (after 5 years) or getting them resoled
Very comfortable. My first pair of Irish Setters lasted 3 years. I hope these last just as long.
Forget about just boots, this is the best fitting shoe i've had in my life.
I normally get size 12-12.5 but the Red Wing Dealer sized me and recommended I go with 11.5 EE(Wide). Boy, i'm glad I listened to him. This is the most comfortable and best fitting shoe i've had on my foot.
The only drawback is that they are a bit heavy, approximately 4 lbs for the pair. But the steel toe is a requirement for work and the fit makes the weight bearable.
I'm considering buying a pair of Soft Toe Ely's to wear outside of work...these boots are really that comfortable!
I have a pair of these boots that I wear every day. It has been several years under heavy use. I am just now going to purchase a new pair as I finally wore them out. This is the only boot for me, light and comfortable all day to work in
I bought this boot when I took my first real job 2 years ago. I still wear them daily. They look great and after 2 years are still holding up, just a few scuffs from daily wear. All In all I would recommend this boot to anyone who works hunts or just likes to be outside
I initially bought this pair of boots for work as a sheet metal worker, but now that I'm in the US Navy and travel everywhere, I use them for everything. Whether it's hunting, fly fishing, lawn work, or hard labor, these boots have held up after 3 years of use across the country. I would recommend them to anyone who needs an all around, versatile boot.
i have had these boots for over 2 years and still going strong.
I bought these shoes 2 years ago an there still going strong wear great and I am not disappointed. worth the money. I am in building maintenance so they get a work out.
